RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (Fox News) — Calverton Airport in Riverhead, N.Y., has turned its runways into parking lots for cars damaged by Hurricane Sandy.
The airport has rented out runways to Insurance Auto Auctions Inc, a salvage auto auction company specializing in total-loss vehicles, who is seeking to temporarily store the water-logged vehicles, according to .
Currently, there are about 15,000 cars and trucks on the airports’ runways, filing 35 acres of space.
The cars are considered damaged, but not totaled.
The cars are being auctioned off online, however, buyers must be recyclers, rebuilders or dismantlers and registered with the state.
